Gamified Data Collection and Communication Design for the Democratized Future of AI and Society

2020 - present

In collaboration with: Sugano Lab

AICOM is a joint project of DLX Design Lab and Sugano Lab at the Institute of Industrial Science, the University of Tokyo. The objective is to design a new mechanism to democratize AI technology by creating opportunities for communication between researchers and the general public by providing a set of games and workshops for acquiring learning data. In the AICOM data acquisition game, two players are paired up and work together to win points by guessing words on a transparent board while predicting the letters their opponent is looking at. Since the face images during the game are recorded along with the correct characters, a dataset that can be used to train gaze estimation AI is simultaneously created by pairing face images and gaze directions.

In conjunction with game participation, the event will also introduce AI technology and provide an opportunity for an idea generation workshop, giving participants the chance to think about the future together with researchers rather than being subjected to one-way data acquisition.

The ultimate goal is to design a mutually meaningful mechanism that enables participants to learn about AI and machine learning technologies and understand the reasons and purposes for which data is needed while researchers realize the data collection process, which is essential for advancing AI research, by turning it into a game so that it can be widely opened to the public.

This project is part of “future society project”, which has been started as an international research exchange project in between The University of Tokyo IIS, DLX Design Lab and National University of Singapore, Keio-NUS CUTE centre under the support of The University of Tokyo Ushioda Foundation.
